MAGEC – MAGnetic Expansion Control – spinal growing rod is the latest technology through which scoliosis treatment in children can be done successfully. With this minimally-invasive treatment the early onset of scoliosis among children can be effectively treated.
Generally scoliosis treatment makes use of rods which has to be manually lenghtened while the child is growing. In order to lengthen the rod at least two surgeries in a year is required. With MAGEC, the rod is magnetically controlled with an external remote control. This way not only is the surgery minimally-invasive, but it also brings down the number of surgeries which needs to be performed on the child. The result is less pain to the patient as well as lesser time for then treatment procedure.
Growing rods are the best tools for children suffering from a significant spinal curvature, and which therefore needs bracing/ casting to be controlled. These rods are usually attached to the spine above and below the curve. It can be lengthened during the follow-up surgical procedures, thereby allowing the spine to continue growing. This way the curve can be managed until the child is old enough for a spinal fusion surgery.
