Recent studies by dermatologists at the Yale University show that vitiligo patients who are on arthritis drugs have seen restoration of skin color. Vitiligo is a very common skin disorder, wherein the skin loses its natural pigmentation/ color. Steroid creams and light therapy are the most common treatmets given to vitiligo patients.

Dr. Brett King and Dr. Craiglow who conducted this study jointly found that a patient who were administered arthritis drug named tofacitinib saw a partial repigmentation within two months of treatment. They also noticed that by five months, the patient had almost completely recovered with only a few white spots of her body. This way they arrived to the conclusion that the existing class of FDA-approved medications, also known as Janus Kinase (JAK) inhibitors can be used as a viable alternative to the traditional methods of vitiligo treatment.

Though further research needs to be done in order to confirm the drug's efficiency and safety, tofacitinib can surely change the way vitiligo has been treated till date and save the patients from the emotional trauma they go through due to this skin disorder.
