Outskirts Press Announces the Release of Diamondfire: Selected Poems by Lee Underwood
Highly Acclaimed Musician, Author, Journalist, & Poet
December 23, 2015 – Denver, CO and San Francisco, CA – During the late ’60s and early ’70s, Lee Underwood toured and recorded with singer/songwriter Tim Buckley, playing lead guitar on seven of the nine albums Buckley released. Today, he announces the release of his second collection of poetry, Diamondfire: Selected Poems, published by Outskirts Press.
Some of the poems in Diamondfire appeared in Timewinds, his first collection, which received stellar reviews, and Underwood has given numerous readings in San Francisco, Yosemite, Sacramento, Mariposa, Oakhurst, Fresno, and elsewhere. He has published poems in Light of Consciousness, ZamBomba, In the Grove and The Central California Poetry Journal, and served as co-host of the well-known Fresno radio show Between the Lines: Poetry to Take You Home with fellow poet Preston Chase.
“One of my great joys is reading aloud for audiences who take delight in frolicking with language,” Underwood says. “They enjoy not only the literal content of words in these and other poems, but also the aural sensuality of them, the rhythmic undulations, the melodic cling-binging bell tones and thunderbooms above and beyond rational content.”
Underwood is also the author of Blue Melody: Tim Buckley Remembered (Backbeat; San Francisco), honored by Britain’s Uncut music magazine as one of the ten best music books of the year. He co-authored flutist Paul Horn’s autobiography, Inside Paul Horn (HarperCollins; 1990), and in 1991 received the Crystal Award for Music Journalism at the New Age Music Convention in Hollywood.
While living in Los Angeles after his years with Buckley, Underwood wrote extensively about music and musicians and served as West Coast editor for Down Beat magazine from 1975-1981. His articles, interviews, and reviews appeared in dozens of periodicals, including L.A. Times, L.A. Weekly, Billboard, Rolling Stone, Pulse, Jazz Forum, Players, Soul, L.A. Free Press, Coda, Body/Mind/Spirit, New Realities, Players, Yoga Journal and New Age Journal.
“With Diamondfire, poet Lee Underwood explores the psyche and the soul with passion and wit, merging exciting and often innovative language with human emotion that spans the spectrum of consciousness from darkland neurosis to shining white light… Underwood has a keen ear for music as well as for language. Diamondfire sums up a life brimming over with grace, wisdom, heart, and poetic intensity.” –Dalton Rhodes, musician, poet, author
