Grand Blanc, MI - Patients with Lyme disease are often shuttled from practice to practice due to the complexity and stigma of the disease. Unfortunately, Lyme disease is a multifaceted infection that causes many health issues over time. It is estimated that 300,000 per year contract Lyme disease, according to the International Lyme and Associated Diseases Society (ILADS). Yet, many physicians are not comfortable treating this condition, or they fear professional backlash from their colleagues and respective licensing boards for doing so. But that isn't stopping one local doctor from comprehensively caring for these patients.
Dr. Mark Morningstar of the Natural Wellness & Pain Relief Center in Grand Blanc has been treating patients with Lyme disease for many several years. When asked, he attributes much of his treatment success to being a chiropractic physician who is also board certified in naturopathic medicine. "Patients with Lyme disease have many systemic health issues all happening at the same time. "We feel that the best treatment for these patients is by not only combating the infection itself, but also by repairing and rebuilding all of the body systems that have been ravaged by the infection. This is really the best hope for providing a long term recovery. Since joint pain is so common in Lyme disease, being dually credentialed gives my the opportunity to help work with the infection as well as to relieve the musculoskeletal symptoms of Lyme disease, " says Dr. Morningstar. Integrative medicine approaches like those used at the Natural Wellness & Pain Relief Center are steadily gaining popularity, even if the scientific evidence is still lukewarm on their effectiveness. "How can you deny a therapy works when wheelchair-bound patients are suddenly up and around and becoming some semblence of their old selves again, " questions Morningstar.
Lyme disease has gained attention more recently with notable celebrities coming forward and acknowledging their Lyme disease diagnosis. New Lyme disease treatment guidelines published by ILADS have also allowed physicians to combat Lyme disease more comprehensively. "There has been a groundswell of patient demand wanting answers and treatment options. These patients are tired of being told that there is nothing wrong with them, or being diagnosed with some type of psychiatric disorder. Dr. Morningstar explains, "our goal is to provide Lyme disease patients with the opportunity to improve their quality of life and overcome this terrible disease."
