In the last two decades, the urology market has increasingly become a technologically driven and dependent specialty market. The field expanded at a staggering rate with several novel treatments eventually failing rigorous clinical assessment even as urologists searched for superior and less invasive methods to treat their patients.
The practice of urology has however changed enormously since a plethora of new technologies and techniques have been discovered and innovated. The present technologies that are utilized in the treatment of urological problems makes use of robotics, lasers and other new technologies that include radiofrequency ablation (RFA) and laparoscopy.
Major robotic treatment procedures include radical prostatectomy, radical cystectomy, partial nephrectomy and pyeloplasty amongst others and are being increasingly used in the modern treatment of urological problems and surgery.
Robotic treatment and surgery is used to treat urologic conditions such as prostate cancer, kidney cancer, bladder cancer and adrenal cancer. Robotic surgery is also used to cure urologic conditions including female incontinence, ureteropelvic junction (UPJ) obstruction, vesicoureteral reflux, benign prostatic hyperplasia or enlargement and ureteral stricture or obstruction.
There are also different types of lasers that are used in surgery and treatment. Some of the laser based technologies include holmium laser enucleation of the prostate (HoLeP) and associated prostatic procedures, lasers for urinary calculi, lasers for bladder tumours and lasers in laparoscopy.
The laser treatments that are increasingly being used in urology include benign prostatic hypertrophy, strictures, bladder cancer and urinary tract stones. There are certain undeniable advantages of laser treatment in urology. For example, the Holmium laser lithotripsy treatment method is very accurate in ability to destroy all urinary calcullii at all sites and is delivered via fibres 550 to 200m. the process is flexible and is easily absorbed in water. The Laser prostatectomy treatment is essentially bloodless, saline irrigant and has long catheter times.
Other modern methods and technologies of treatment of urological problems include therapies such as RFA, cryosurgery, focal therapies, HIFU for prostate cancer and small renal masses, and cryotherapy.
There is also increasing use and role of telementoring and simulation in the laparoscopy treatment of urological problems. These technoliges are increasingly playing a vital role in urological training in minimally invasive surgery.
Other modern treatments methods that have transformed the treatment procedures and increased the rates of success of treatment include tissue bioengineering, hydro-jet surgery, renal radiosurgery and nanotechnology.
Some of the major techniques that health practitioners are increasingly using in urological treatment are laparoendoscopic single-site surgery (LESS) and natural orifice transluminal endoscopic surgery (NOTES).
