The generous power of the sun is now being utilized in Georgia starting last Tuesday afternoon. This marks the beginning of the solar partnership between the University of Georgia and Georgia Power Company. The partnership is an initiative of the Georgia Public Service Commission to diversify the Country’s portfolio of options for power generation.

Solar panels are known to generate the energy that comes from the heat of the sun. Georgia is just one of the many countries that find the alternative power generation a great alternative for power supply. In addition to that, the country has found a way to exceed one of the solar panel impediments – solar panel allocation. It is a well-known fact that solar panels are most effectively at the height of the sun’s heat that falls directly in the solar panels. The country has created “solar tracking” where it arranges the solar panel in a way that is can follow the sun, thus, effectively maximizes its power generation.

The solar panels that are located at the edge of the wooden area are just out of view of South Milledge Avenue that is near the State Botanical Garden. The solar panels are arranged into three separate configurations that allow it to follow the movement of that sun, in results to higher power generation. Some of the solar panels are arranged to face south, some are facing southwest. Some solar panels are arranged to track the sun’s movement while the others also change according to the compass direction. This is to track the sun and its location more easily. The current configurations of the solar panels allow it to move once every couple of minutes.

According to the Georgia Public Service Commissioner Tim Echols, the aim of solar tracking project is to advocate the alternative energy sources that include solar power generation. It is to determine on which of the tracking configurations gives the most efficiency in converting energy. The data that the solar panels could provide can become the guide of Georgia Power and other utility companies on deciding in which types of the solar arrays is best to install all around Georgia.

Aside from the solar tracking project, Georgia Power facility will also use the UGA’s South Milledge tract for some preliminary investigation for the battery-based storage of power that will be not be immediately placed onto the electrical grid.

The facility reports that at least a year of operation will provide results to the effectiveness of the solar tracking project. This is the start of the alternative power source that every country around the world needs to have.
