Optometrists at Black Rock Vision Center celebrate the success of the PROKERA® Lens for patients in Reno and Sparks since its introduction to the Reno practice a year ago.
The PROKERA® Lens was created by the company Bio-Tissue® and is currently the only biological bandage lens approved by the Food & Drug Administration. The bandage lenses are made up of an amniotic membrane that is placed over the cornea to heal the cornea in an efficient manner.
The biological bandage lens technology has enabled eye care professionals to treat severe dry eye and corneal abrasions more efficiently. The lenses expedite the healing process by reducing inflammation through contact with the ocular surface. The biological bandage lenses are placed on one eye at time for four to five days. Optometrists may remove the lens or stain through the lens at a follow-up appointment to view the healing progress.
“We have seen great success with our patients from using PROKERA® to treat many different conditions of the cornea. The bandage lenses protect the surface of the eye to expedite the healing process,” explains Dr. Southam of Black Rock Vision Center.
Black Rock Vision Center is one of the only optometric practices in Washoe County to use the cutting edge technology.
