In the recent years there have been many improvements in the medical imaging technology. While the new technologies are becoming fairly common, they may not always available at the hospital near you. The latest medical imaging technologies to hit the market are:
Computed Tomography (CT) Angiography
This new technology has eliminated the need to insert a catheter into an artery to examine blood vessels. A completely noninvasive way to get the same information as an invasive catheter angiography has been made possible by this new technology. A Ct scan is taken after just injects the contrast material into the arm of the patient and the arteries in the lungs, kidneys, brain and legs can then be examined. The process, that takes just around 10 to 25 minutes, is safer, faster and cheaper than the traditional method of cathode insertion.
Imaging Tests Instead of Exploratory Surgery
CT scan also has helped to largely replace exploratory surgery. Earlier doctors had to do surgery just to see what was going on inside the body. CT scans, MR scans and , ultrasound have become so good that they have largely done away with the need for the surgical approach.
PET/CT Scans for Cancer
While PET or positron emission tomography scanning is not new to the medical imaging world, this technology has become increasingly important in recent years. This is so because this technology can be combined with CT scanning in one device.
Medical experts claim that while PET scan has been around for a long time but re fact is that health fraternity was not able to completely make use of this technology in a complete manner.
PET scan works as a type of nuclear medicine where a small dose of radioactive material is injected before the test. The amount of radiation is similar to that to which one is exposed to during an X-ray. The advantage of PET scans is that they are able to image biological functions, like blood flow or glucose metabolism unlike other scanning technologies that allow doctors and technicians to look at organs or tissue. This technology can be used, for example, with CT scanning to enable detection of metabolic changes associated with cancer much earlier than testing for tumors.
Digital Mammography
This technology has propelled the detection and treatment of breast cancer screening. This technology is able to provide a much higher level of detail than older technologies. This technology is easier and faster to perform and since they are digital, it's very easy for a doctor to send the images instantly to other experts or medical centers. This technology is more accurate for some groups of women, especially those who were under 50 and those with dense breast tissue, premenopausal women and women who were around the age of menopause.
