East Providence, Rhode Island, January 15, 2016: Next week solar industry professionals will gather at an annual conference to discuss the opportunities, challenges, and benefits of developing solar energy plants on landfill and brownfield sites. Greg Lucini, President and CEO of ISM Solar, and Paul O’Malley, VP at Watershed Geo will be discussing their joint venture, a new system called SolarTurf™ and it’s installation at the Crazy Horse Landfill in Monterey County, California. The SolarTurf™ system consists of a ballasted solar array mounted on landfill and brownfield sites that have been capped with ClosureTurf®, the industry’s leading geosynthetic closure system.
Lucini and O’Malley will lead a presentation about landfill and brownfield closure methods and the challenges they present for solar development and maintenance. David Meza, P.E. Authority Engineer at the Salinas Valley Solid Waste Authority which manages the Crazy Horse Landfill, will join to discuss the site’s specific conditions and requirements as well as the post closure performance. “There is a significant opportunity to support our national renewable energy infrastructure by reclaiming already degraded land for solar development,” said Lucini, “smart technology like the SolarTurf system not only makes it easier to install and operate solar farms, but also eliminates some of the negative environmental impacts associated with traditional soil closure methods.”
The Solar Development on Landfills and Brownfields conference will be held from January 20-21, 2016 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The event is hosted by EUCI, an organization with more than 25 years of experience leading conferences, seminars, workshops, and courses designed exclusively for the energy industry. EUCI’s goal is to provide an objective, independent perspective on new and emerging practices from across the energy industry by encouraging dialog and helping spread best practices. Learn more.
