Total Hip Arthoplasty (THA), commonly known as hip replacement surgery, is one of the most common types of joint replacement surgery. Recently a study published in PAIN – the official publication of The International Association for The Study of Pain (IASP) – shows that though the use of medications increases the year before the hip replacement surgery, but once the surgery is done there are long term reductions in the use of drugs for insomnia and pain.

The study also shows that with continued follow-up, the use of opioid comes down by 14 percent, that of NSAID by 18 percent and there is a 13 percent drop in the use of non-opioid analgesic. While reserachers also found that there was a decreased use of medciations to treat anxiety, when it came to antidepressants no major change has been observed. Therefore it can be concluded that depression in patients suffering undergoing hip-replacement need not totally be due to hip pain. Overall the study is a good news for THA patients as it brings down their dependency on drugs.
