Online food sales in China continue to grow in popularity as consumers seek convenience and choice.  Austrade estimates that in China, between 5 and 10 per cent of retail food is sold online.

In April this year, the Chinese Government made changes to tax laws for imported products sold on cross-broader e-commerce sites. 

Designed to put foreign and local products on equal footing, the new law sees overseas goods purchased through e-commerce platforms subject to import duties as well as value added tax (VAT) and consumption tax in China, essentially pushing the prices of imported products up.

But demand for imported food is high. A recent market research study found that 84% of consumers in Shanghai and Beijing had purchased imported food.  Perceiving imported food products as safe and of a high quality, consumers are still purchasing imported food products online at a rapid rate.

ACEC/MA Announces Ochsendorf DeJong and Block as 2016 winner of Grand Conceptor Award

The American Council of Engineering Companies of Massachusetts (ACEC/MA) has named Ochsendorf DeJong and Block (ODB) Consulting Engineers, Inc. as winner of the Grand Conceptor Award in recognition of the firm’s masonry specialty structural engineering work on the MIT Sean Collier Memorial in Cambridge.

The Collier Memorial marks the site where Officer Sean Collier was shot and killed on April 18, 2013.

Professor John Ochsendorf, Matthew DeJong and Phillipe Block developed 3D digital modeling software to evaluate the structural behavior of the gravity forces in the five-way shallow unreinforced stone arch of 32 granite blocks that constitute the timeless structure.  The blocks are part of the Memorial’s design concept of “strength through unity.”

ODB completed the project in one year during a record snow-producing New England winter.

Suffolk Construction served as contractor for the project.

 “The recipient of the Grand Conceptor Award is recognized as having designed the overall best engineering project of the year,” said ACEC/MA President David Vivilecchia. “Without question, the Sean Collier Memorial stands as testament to the qualities of strength and openness; it is outstanding in its unique and innovative application and for its eternal acknowledgement of the young officer who gave his life in the protection of others.”

Human connections key to success for High-tech specialist security company

CCTV specialist iFacility offers clients an end-to-end service that meets all of their security needs - and more besides. CEO Nathan Dervin discusses the importance of maintaining business relationships.

Something very exciting happens when I’m in the control room of CCTV and integrated security specialist iFacility. A lorry comes into a biogas station many miles away. Its driver puts on a pair of gloves, and is allowed to refuel.

This may not sound all that astonishing - but believe me, it’s clever. First up, the lorry’s registration number is cross-referenced to a database held in the iFacility control room. With that confirmed, it is allowed to pass through a remote-controlled barrier and pull up alongside the pump.

Next come the gloves. Biofuel is stored at exceptionally low temperatures, so could do a lot of damage upon contact with naked skin. To protect the driver, the pump is only switched on when iFacility’s operative sees him cover his hands.

With the fill-up complete, the driver clambers back aboard and heads off, secure in the knowledge that his account will be settled. It’s a seamless procedure, lasting no more than five minutes. And it’s all made possible by a combination of bespoke software, the latest surveillance technology, and a highly skilled operative who is capable of overseeing it while also monitoring thousands of other cameras at locations throughout the UK.

A comprehensive service

“This pretty much epitomises what we do at iFacility,” explains the company’s chief executive officer and founder, Nathan Dervin. “We are an end-to-end security specialist. That means we provide everything from the IP [internet protocol, which enables CCTV footage to be sent digitally, and thereby tracked remotely] equipment needed to keep a premises secure to the software and manpower needed to aggregate and interpret data, and respond appropriately when a security breach looks likely.”

Mr Dervin makes these comments once we have left the iFacility control room, which was constructed two years ago. This is a high-security, hi-tech environment, with a bank of large screens, an array of computers, and its own fresh-air system that protects the occupants from being gassed. To enter and exit this bunker-like room, you pass through an airlock, bookended by thick steel doors. Suffice it to say, it won’t be attacked in a hurry.

“We have to maintain the very highest standards of security,” Mr Dervin explains once we are ensconced in iFacility’s new boardroom. This is located just across the road from its previous offices, where it started six years ago.

“We’re 24 hour monitoring the premises of some really big companies. We need to make sure we’re protected from attack, in order to reassure our clients that we can protect them.”

Keeping businesses safe

In essence, this is iFacility’s promise to its clients: it knows how to keep them safe. More than that, thanks to its in-house software development team, it can create bespoke programming that works with off-the-shelf products from the likes of Sony and delivers exactly what is needed for their businesses.

Teenager writes song that is helping cancer patient

OLATHE, Kan. —An Olathe, Kan. teenager's "Unbreakable" song is giving cancer patients hope in the face of struggle.

One such patient -- Andrea Lancaster -- said she heard the song "Unbreakable" by accident. 

"It verbalized a lot of how I feel," said Lancaster, who has been undergoing six months of painful chemotherapy treatment.

Gabby Chapa's song talks about how it's important to have hope even when everything seems bleak. Lancaster said she has listened to it every night during her battle with cancer.

"No matter how hard it gets, hope keeps us alive," she said "That's what you have to remember when you're going through treatment and those really, really hard dark days."

"When it feels like everything is out of control, you should still have hope and never give up," said Chapa, 15.

She said when she wrote the song, she never realized it would mean so much to someone else.

"It gives her hope and, for me, it gave me hope," Chapa said. "I want other people to have their own story of hope through the song."

The hearing is scheduled for 10 November 2016 before the Higher Regional Court of Düsseldorf, Germany.

Wall-mounted holders and flush-mounted power supplies for all Apple iPad models form the nucleus of the smart things range of products. These items are used globally as control centers for home automation solutions. Thomas Detemple, managing director of smart things, says, "Samsung using the brand name has been a catastrophe for us. The overlap of content with the "SmartThings" platform for home automation advertised by Samsung has already caused our clients to ask us about the use of the brand name by Samsung. We held negotiations with Samsung representatives to avoid additional confusion in the marketplace. When these negotiations did not result in a solution, we initiated legal proceedings."

In return, Samsung Electronics Deutschland applied for the cancellation of the EU brand of smart things. Thomas Detemple continued, "At this juncture, I wonder just what a trademark registration is worth if a brand name can be simply used by a large company and we, as small and midsize businesses, must go to court to keep the essence of our business. Consequently, the trademark is essential for us. If we would have to rename the company now, we would encounter a lot of expense and this would essentially mean the end of our company."

Jeffrey Little of Asheboro, North Carolina recently received advanced level training, from the American Association of Premier DUI Attorneys, on Blood Draw Tube Validation Issues on DUI - Marijuana Cases. Jeffrey received training that it has been discovered that some blood test tube certifications were only for alcohol purposes and that some blood draw tubes, including the chemicals contained inside for preservative and anti-coagulants, have never been validated for THC testing.  This training was provided by Ziad Youssef. Mr. Youssef is a Member of the Association and he has been designated as the State Ambassador for the Association in the State of Washington. Mr. Youssef discovered that the blood draw tubes being used in his area were never validated for THC testing and the manufacturer confirmed that none of their blood collection tubes have been validated for Marijuana, Cannabis, or Active THC testing.  Thus, any such blood evidence in DUI - Marijuana cases may be subject to suppression.
